FibColl® Atelocollagen Insert 24 is a novel cell culture insert that uses a membrane entirely made from atelocollagen. Unlike other collagen-coated plastic membranes, FibColl® pores are not clogged, and the fiber structure of atelocollagen enables cell culture in an in vivo mimicking environment. The microporous structure between atelocollagen fibrils allows the permeation of molecules even over 600 kDa, making it suitable for barrier function assessment and co-culture models.

Applications:

  • Culture on the membrane
  • Co-culture
  • Cell sheet transplantation

Features:

  • Membranes made from atelocollagen are permeable to molecules with molecular weight even higher than 600 kDa.
  • A barrier function assessment model can be developed by tight junction formation of epithelial cells.
  • FibColl® is an easy-to-use hanging cell culture insert considering medium exchange and membrane recovery after culture.
  • The membrane is biodegradable and therefore it can also be used for cell sheet transplantation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are some examples of using FibColl® Atelocollagen Inserts?
We have formed tight junctions between adjacent renal tubular epithelial cells, created epidermal models using keratinocytes, and induced osteoblast osteogenic differentiation.

Why is equilibration required before use?
The equilibration with medium generates a suitable environment for cell culture.

How are cells cultured on FibColl® Atelocollagen Inserts harvested?
The recovery is performed with trypsin solution. We have confirmed that adding trypsin solution to the membrane does not dissolve it.

Is sectioning after culture possible?
In a similar way to tissue samples, frozen embedding and sectioning can be performed after fixation with formalin, etc.

How do you observe cells?
You can see cultured cells using a low-magnification phase-contrast microscope; observation of individual cells at high magnification is difficult. For detailed observation, it is recommended to perform immunostaining, etc. and histological assessment after culture completion.
What is the difference between FibColl® and conventional Atelocollagen Permeable Membranes?

Although the membrane portion of both types of products is made from atelocollagen, FibColl® Atelocollagen Inserts have a high substance permeability that allows the permeation of molecules even over 600 kDa, produced with a unique fibril formation method of  atelocollagen. Therefore, although conventional atelocollagen permeable membranes show high transparency, they have a limited permeation molecular weight.

What is the difference between FibColl® Atelocollagen Inserts and general cell culture inserts?

Our products are made of 100% atelocollagen. Thus, the pores of FibColl® Atelocollagen Inserts are not clogged by coatings while its membranes retain the fibrous structure of atelocollagen. Moreover, even though FibColl® is permeable to certain substances, cells cannot pass through it. Therefore, it is possible to collect cells from each culture surfaces after co-culture. In addition, FibColl® is biodegradable, making it suitable for cell transplantation.

What products are used for cell transplantation?

If the transplantation site can be incised, transplantation of an atelocollagen sponge or membrane-containing cells is applicable.

  • 3D Honeycomb Boosted
  • Collagen Sponge Honeycomb/Honeycomb Disk 96
  • Collagen Sponge Mighty
  • FibColl® Atelocollagen Inserts
  • Atelocollagen Permeable Membrane

If the incision is less preferable, it is possible to mix cells with a high-concentration of atelocollagen solution and administer it locally so that the collagen forms a gel and cells can be transplanted to the injection site.

  • Atelocollagen powder
Is it possible to manufacture FibColl® Atelocollagen Inserts in sizes and thicknesses other than off-the-shelf products?

We can produce a customizable product, so please contact us first. For smaller items than the off-the-shelf product, it is possible to use a sharp knife such as a scalpel.
