Background
What are Proteoglycans?
Proteoglycans are glycoproteins widely found in the extracellular matrix and on the cell surface of animals. It consists of sulfated polysaccharides called glycosaminoglycans—such as chondroitin sulfate, dermatan sulfate, heparan sulfate, heparin, and keratan sulfate—covalently bound to a core protein.
In the body, proteoglycans form complexes with fibrous matrix proteins such as hyaluronic acid and collagen.
