The CYP7A1 gene, encoding cholesterol 7alpha-hydroxlase is specifically expressed in mature liver hepatocytes. Asahina et al identified CYP7A1 as a gene specifically expressed in liver but not in yolk sac. In contrast to hepatocyte-related genes such a Afp, alb, Hnf4 and Ttr, which are expressed in both the liver and yolk sac visceral endoderm, CYP7A1 is therefore a highly specific marker for hepatocytes.
